“Copalli” in Nahuatl (native Mexican language) translates to Copal in Spanish and refers to the resin that comes from the “Copalquahuit” Copalli tree from where the resin comes from. Used in ceremonies throughout America for thousands of years, it has been essential in not only ceremonies but also for medicinal uses. There are variations of copal that come from the same tree.
This copal (tree resin) is pure and unprocessed. It is referred to as Copal Lagrima in Spanish, Tear copal in English due to its natural shape and way it is produced by the copalli tree.
The copal lagrima offered here to you was gathered by my family in the state of Puebla and Guerrero, Mexico. It has been a family tradition for several generations to gather copal. I had the opportunity to know my great grandfather who also harvested copal. During rainy season (June-September), my uncle and cousins, go out to begin the preparation of obtaining the gummy resin known as Copal Blanco, another variation of resin from the same tree. Cuts are made on the tree and a maguey leaf is placed near the cuts so the gummy resin we know as Copal Blanco slowly drips into the leaf.  Sustainability is important to maintain the copalli trees healthy. Only older trees are used to produce copal blanco. There is a rotating process that occurs in which a group of trees are used for 4 years consecutively and let to rest 4 years while another group of trees are used.  It is believed that not following this process with lead to copalli trees drying and no longer producing this important resin. Unfortunately, not too many people respect this process which will cause the copalli to dry and die.  Several bars of this copal blanco is collected.  Among the copal blanco, we also collect Copal Negro (black copal), Lagrima (tears), Tecopal or copal Piedra (rock copal), mirra (tree bark). The various copal is ready to be used by the time Dia de los Muertos (day of the dead) is celebrated. This is when copal is mostly used.
Copal Lagrima is gathered.  No incisions are made to the trunk of the tree by humans.  Copal Lagrima is produced naturally by the copalli tree as residue from anywhere in the tree where there have been previous cuts including old cuts from the harvesting of Copal Blanco or where some branches may have fallen off.  Copal Lagrima is more symbolic than other types of copal.   They symbolize the tears and offering of the tree.
It is a traditional belief in native American culture that the smoke of the copal purifies the spirit and carries out messages to those not among us any longer in the physical plane and prayers out to Universe. It is the contact of the Earth-Water elements makes with Fire to produce the smoke, visible to us as an element of Air.
My knowledge in this area is based on experience in working with and utilizing herbs and resins.  I am not a graduate of herbal medicine or practices from an institution or program, nor studied under any person.  I am a descendent of those who have practiced traditional medicine in Mexico for generations.  I have been shared information by family throughout my life.  This is a way of life for me and it has been since I have recollection. Every product that I offer at my shop and that is for the purpose of spiritual and space harmonizing I have used myself.
